Well I can't tell you what fuel filter to get, but I can tell you the difference between those high performance large chromey ones and the piddly little standard ones.

In two words, bugger all. Only in applications where you need lots of fuel going to the carbies/injectors will it make close to a few hp difference, but even then, you are very unlikely to notice it when driving. My brother's rally car (A Ford Escort Mk 2, don't laugh, the Escort has a little bit of rallying pedigree Razz) uses a approx. 400ml capacity fuel filter only because the Dellortos are bastards to tune (though not as dastardly as Webers) and at 7000 revs you won't get enough fuel filtered through a little filter.

On my soon to be 1976 Celica (it's not even a twin-cam, but I need something cheap) rally car, I'm replumbing the whole fuel system and will put in a high flow (Ryco) fuel filter, but only because it's not really that expensive to get one anyway, and I'm putting in an electric fuel pump and two Solex carbies, which need slightly better fuel flow than the standard set up.

But for most (maybe all) street 1600cc engines, just grab a standard Ryco or similar brand fuel filter.
