Thing is, every other old school toyota I've driven (corollas, coronas, xA6x celicas, etc.) with drums on the back have had pretty decent handbrakes. Can't actually remember what its like on a xa2x, but why should it be particualy nasty? Put some new linings in, and carefully adjust it, should be alright.
If you want a bad handbrake, try a bloody commodore!
