My friend had an absolute rust bucket of a JDM ae86 (the car was cheap). From the outside, it looked SWEET AS. mechanically, it was SWEET AS. But structurally, it was fuked. This JDM thing had been drifted beyond chassis flex. The car simply did not drive right. He ended up scrapping it for parts. He rebirthed the whole LEVIN into an aus spec shell. The shell was stripped, prepped and refitted with all the JDM panels, lights, bumpers, mecahnics, and race suspension. Afterwards, there was no difference between the JDM and Aus Spec AT ALL. The only way you could tell was the Toyota Motor Corperation Australian plate on the bulkhead (next to the jap manufacturing plate). (BTW, these plates don't mention ANYTHING about it being a levin, trueno, GTV, or GT APEX). But I tell you what, the car drove a whole lot better. Something to think about. (Is this car that much of a phoney?) Also, would you consider buying a JDM junker race trueno, and rebirthing it with a straight aus spec shell (an old woman driving a 4ac wouldn't be giving an ae86 chassis a workout ). But consider this, if you do the rebirthing option, you can get yourself the quality of the $20k trueno at a fraction of the cost.
