in a 20 year old car, suspension would be a good place to start. If you can afford it get some adjustable Koni's otherwise KYB's are supposed to be pretty good.
Don't make it too low as it stuffs up the steering geometery.
low King springs should do the trick.
while you are at it, get some nolathane bushes.
I think Whiteline do thicker swaybars for ae86's and maybe a front strut brace as well.
That should make it handle a whole lot better, but I am sure that some AE86 guru's will have somethings to add.
