Well, we ended up going back to SSS for a few things, & while we were there we were able to swap the yoke for one with a good inch at heast of shaft still on it, & it should be attached to the original shaft & balanced etc by monday, for $250.
The other good thing is, this is my brothers car, so he foots all the bills. 
If anyone ever needs any tailshaft work done, I can highly recommend Sydney Driveline Services, at 10 Reservoir Ave, Greenacre, 9790 7344.
The guy who helped us out also pointed out the transmission dampner built in to the rear tailshaft. It's actually a tube inside a tube, with a uni & flange at one end connected to the outer tube and the same at the other but connected to the inner tube, and then there's a 2-3mm layer of rubber between the two.
He reckoned this would break before one of the unis, I guess we'll just have to wait & see.
