Let me tell you my problem with NRMA inspections.

In my experience that have covered their ass so bad! When mum was selling the Landcruiser we had an inspection done and the dude rocks up and tells us that the head gasket is blown! what an idiot! the car had never overheated and the gasket was fine (this was like about 1.5 years before we actually sold it). He didn't do a CO2 test or anything. I don't know what he did to come up with that verdict, but it meant that we sure as heck didn't sell it that day.

They are so paranoid, that they would rather over-diagnose than under-diagnose and then be 'wrong', and perhaps liable.

When I bought my Celica, I had the same test done, the dude rocks up and spots a lot of little things like "incorrectly installed radio antenna" and stuff like that that was true, but also says that my power steering pump is leaking.

Now I KNOW that Toyotas power steering pumps are built like sieves, and they all seem to leak, so I wasn't surprised. But what has surprised me, is that in the 2.5 years that I have had the car, I have never had to top up the fluid because of a leak. In fact, on the white concrete that I park it on, it has never dropped a drip of anything at all.

In both cases, the NRMA dude made a call which was wrong, and a call that would have been very expensive, if we had tried to get the 'problem' fixed.

I sure don't appreciate that kind of self protective diagnosis, and so, I am not all that enthusiastic about their services in this regard. Not that I don't think they can't and don't spot valuable and significant problems, I just think that they have a higher agenda, their own preservation, which jeopardises their doing a good job.
