well if your temp guage is working ok and the car doesn't 'overheat' short trips would be ok I reckon.
So you haven't had the coolant changed recently? (ie, potential air in the system?)
But you need to find out what is doing it. Try a diff radiator cap if the old cap is leaky. To get air out of the system you could always run it with the cap off in the driveway till it gets up to heat and give it the odd rev to try and push the air out... just an idea.. (don't forget to put the heater on "hot" in the car while you do this)
