Ok I have removed said turbo's and looked at a few things.

Yes they are some differences, however I didn't open them up to see if the internals are any different.

Firstly the Gen3 turbo's have a "C1" embossed on the outlet ot the compressor housing as follows

while the Gen2 turbos had a 6 (front turbo) and an 8 (rear turbo) embossed on them.

The outlets both had the same internal diameter.

The second difference was the larger outlet bolt spacing (approx 52mm Gen2 and 57mm Gen 3)and larger outlet pipes on the Gen3.

Another difference that I wasn't expecting to find was a slight difference in the exhaust manifold. The Gen2 rear collector had a division for cylinder 4 whereas the front collector and neither of the Gen3 ones showed any. I don't know what difference this would make, but the rear one on the Gen3 had the runner almost perpendicular to the collector. I wouldn't have thought that was the best situation but there you have it.

Well thats all I found on my cursory look. The actual outside diameter of the compressor housings where the same, but I guess the different bolt spacing may indicate that the inlet diameter and/or compressor wheel may be different.

Thanks for your help Craig, I did do a search and found a post that mentioned the inlet bolt spacing differences.

The Gen2 turbos will be going on the new engine until I can sort out the warrenty issues on the engine.
