Oil filter ones were (AFAIK) originally designed for muddy conditions, ie Speedway, where paper filters would become useless after getting wet.
K+N Paper filter replacements are good, but make sure you block off the hot engine bay/exhaust air from getting to it, and keep the cold air coming in.
