short version: pressure in the crank case caused by charged gases passing the piston rings is recirculated into the inlet to reduce emissions. this carries with it oil, so the purpose of the oil/air seperator is to remove the oil before recirculating the gasses back into the inlet, or as some ppl do just vent to atmosphere.
