Mate the 18-rg and 18-RG are basically the same motor except for the cylinder heads naturally. In that era it was Toyota's identification codes, similar to the 2t engine ex TA22 celica. The 2t was the single cam and the 2t-g was the twin cam, either with injection or twin solex's, but i wont delve into that.
The corona was best suited with the 18r, principly due to the fact that it is the original motor so there is no need to modify engine mounts bellhousing adaptors etc etc. As for transplanting other engines into it, i usually like to stick to a general rule. I always insert an engine that is from the same manufacturer as the original. As for the allowable size....going off my engineers certificate..the calculation says weight of vehicle X 2.5. i.e 1086kg X 2.5= 2.7Litres in capacity. So yes you could legally fit an Isuzu engine into it, but the question remains, why would you want to??? The 18-R developed enough horsepower to propel the vehicle to a 12second 1/4 mile. With more engine mods, such as CC'd combustion chambers to reduce compression ratio and therefore more boost, im sure the thing would get a hell of alot closer to ten's without the cost of installing an isuzu donk. Failing that install a 1J or 1G supercharged or turbocharged etc etc. I'd stick with the toyota running gear and stay clear of the isuzu stuff, but thats just my opinion.
