Hey, anyone worried about cleaning a uni-filter, don't be, it's a piece of piss.
Grab a 2L bottle of turps, & pour about 1/2 into a big bowl or ice-cream container.
Dunk the filter in & out, & really squash it up in the turps, give it a real good clean.
Once the turps is all dirty, chuck it away & use almost all the rest & repeat the above proceedure (hey, turps is only about $2 for 2 litres!).
Now it should be nice & clean, you just need to re-oil it. This can be the tricky part. I found the filter fix oil is way too thick, and can be diluted with turps quite a bit.
The first time I re-oiled mine the oil was heaps thick & I put way too much on, & for ages afterwards the oil would collect at the bottom of the foam & drip down into the engine bay.
I remembered when I went to buy the filter in Hornsby it they had no red ones in stock & grabed the first one off the production line. So becaust it had just been assembled, I watched the guy oil it. It looked & sounded like he just rinsed it out in water, the stuff was so thin. This is where I got the idea about diluting the oil.
Mix about equall parts oil & turps, about a teaspoon of each. Mix this in the big container then soak it up with the foam, the work it through & squeeze out all the excess. Check it a couple days after reinstalling it for oil underneath it, then you'll know if you've used too much.
Too easy.
