If an EFI pump sucks air, even once, it will cause it to fail. Maybe not immediately, but it will start the process.
Priming it, if only for a second or 2, ensures that the surge tank has some fuel.
It should still have fuel from last time you run, but fuel evaporates when heated, so it could move around the system, so you just never know & it gives peace of mind that the EFI pump won't be sucking air.
also gives you a chance to refill the surge tank if you've drained the fuel system for some reason (you can always do a temp wire up to reprime the system).
This is the way I'd do it personally, if you've got better advice to do it your way, & you're comfortable with that, go for it.
If it works all the time, let me know, I might change my thinking.
