3TGTE potential purchase...... what should i ask?

Ok heres the deal, im about to ring a guy that has a 3T that i wanna buy.... its not a private sale, its a business. what should i ask him about the engine and what things should i check to make sure that it is not a lemon? i've never done anything like this and am definately not mechanically enclined.
