There should be a little pointer on the timing chain cover, and a notch in the crank pulley. On number one compression stroke, the pointer and the timing notch should be closest to each other as the points in the dizzy are open at the plug for cylinder one.
you can find the compression stroke by removing the spark plug from the first cylinder, holding your thumb over the hole, then rotating the engine in it's normal direction till you feel the compression. Once you feel the compression keep rotating the engine till the pointer is closest to the notch. If you go past the notch, rewind the motor past the notch again, and retry, as the timing chains will need to be retensioned to give an accurate response.
