The only thing worth doing to your 5M would be to turbo it if you can track down an MTE exhaust manifold and dizzy. It's a T03 turbo so a VLT will bolt right up. After that don't bother, and some would say that's too much trouble already.
Thereafter your into transplant territory. 5/6MGE's are your cheapest options, can be had for less than $1K, will run fine off your 5ME ECU (provided you swap the sensors over) and should fit right in.
After that you can do 7M or a JZ series engine swap. These will require extra effort/significant cashola to get going but would be well worth it.
