Sun, 25 January 2004 07:15 This is a picture of reluctor ignition for a eight cylinder, it can not fire the plugs directly, it is used to trigger a ignition module which then controls the coil/sparks. Reluctor is reference to its magnetic operation (reluctance is the opposition of magnetic flux, akin to electrical resistance) Since the metal has a lower reluctance then air, when the teeth line up the magnetic flux increases which in turn causes a small voltage spike to occur across the two terminals that can be seen in the photo, the ignition module detects this spike and disrupts the primary current flow, thus inducing the secondary voltage to fire the plugs. Its very common in OEM applications due to its simplicity (also since its basically maintenance free since no parts are in contact) Hope that clears that up [Report message to a moderator]
