yeah, same deal for me, i got GZE block, 88kw RWD head, manifold & rail, GZE reg, and I think the copper pipe you are talking about is the one that bolts to the bottom of the reg with a banjo fitting. I have just replaced this with a conventional banjo with a barbed fitting for EFI hose, so i can point it backwards (i relationship to the manifold) to run the hose back & under the manifold.
The damper is just there to attempt to soften pulses in the fuel rail when the injectors open, to keep a constant fuel pressure rather than fluctuating. some cars can get away without it, others, like the shite holden V6's suffer so bad that they actually extended the fuel hose to the rail to try and dampen the pulses further. many 'performance' oriented cars have the damper removed, replaced with just a normal inline fitting. I imagine the damper could be a restriction for fuel flow on big hp engines.
