If you went to a 1jz auto it would be cheaper, but if you want to use your g/box on the 1jz you will still need a bellhousing to fit the 1jz. I guess you could see how much they are from toyota - if you have no luck let me know, I know a guy at my local toyota place and they were very helpful with the 1jz parts. Or you could get one made - there was a thread on this topic I think on the old forums.
If you don't need TEMS etc it will be a bit easier, but I think a front cut is the way to go.
I forgot to say my p/s pump needed new seals and bearings, and the air-con pump from the jza-70 was used on my car.
The good news was the exhaust bolted straight up to the cat-converter, and the front cut came with the front prop-shaft to fit the r154.
The intercooler and piping all bolted up easily too.
I haven't sold the NA 7M because it was totally stuffed, and held on to the W58 box so if I blew up the r154 it could be a stop gap measure to get back on the road (if it bolts to 1j bellhousing and I think it does.
Also we managed to do the wiring so I didn't cut any origianl MA70/7M plugs off, and a 7M could go back in if it had to.
It's worth taking the time to do things properly - the one thing we didn't check/do as good as we should have was the one thing that leaked! (oil pressure sender).
