blake, a standard relay uses these numbers - plus i'm assuming your using a thermo switch that has one wire on the back.

85 & 86 are the coil that drives the relay - one of them can be earthed, the other gets 12V. Seeing as a normal thermo switch provides a ground when triggered, i would wire it up as :
85 - from IGN 12v+
86 - to thermo switch
if you want to override the thermo switch, you run a second wire from 86 to a switch in the cabin, one side of switch gets wire, the other goes to ground.

It's important that you remember that your trigger is coming from the earth connection, not 12V+.

if your thermo switch has two wires, one gets connected to pin 86, the other is grounded.

The coil side of the relay uses minimal current so you won't need heavy-duty wires.

To joice the actual fans, get 12V from the battery or main power rail (usually from large cable from alternator) and via the fuse, connect it to pin 30.

power to the fans then comes from pin 87 (there's sometimes two of them so you can 'power-up' multiple wires). I run two wires to each fan (12+ and earth) so the earth from the fans comes back up to an easy to access spot (e.g. next to the relay).

you could also connect a low-wattage pilot light to a wire coming off pin87 for an idiot light in the cabin.

for this 'triggered' side of the relay use decent weight wires (except for the pilot lite).

this help?
