backfires through the exhaust are due to over rich mixture being ignited in the exhaust. when you lift off, the mixture must go very rich relative to the amount of air, and the start popping.
it can also be caused by a cylinder miss, causing the fresh unburnt charge to hit the hot exhaust...
2" is not too big. depend son the mods... 2" is about ideal for a worked 1.3L, but it's all to do with air flow  a 1.3L at 8000rpm will push as much air as a 1.6 at 6500rpm.
if you have shitty mufflers, it will "sound too big" ie like a gemini  . maybe thats what they were referring to?
