Snapped my shaft

Whats the likeliness of snapping an impeller shaft on a CT20 turbo?
I was driving my car one day... next day I go to turn it on and theres this terrible noise which sounded like a whipper snipper spooling up... the exhaust manifold and turbo got extremely hot in the ten odd seconds I had the car running...
I have started to unbolt all the turbo and exhaust manifold bits... just wanted to know if i'm wasting my time thinking its a snapped impeller shaft...
