Found what the problem is. I have nicked the line whilst removing the engine therefore losing pressure and fluid  that would explain my problem.

...that would also explain the bloody mess everywhere!
Some people bleed brakes by just filling the fluid, opening the bleeders and leaving it sit for a few hours. Others use a pressure bleeder. Whatever excites you, really!
