I'm not going for all out power, but i still want to be able to at least compete with some of my mates cars (ie. 3.3l torana, or a new lancer), is this at least remotely possible with my current engine or am i dreaming. I don't have much money (work at maccas) and was planning on doing it up over the next year or two.

Don't worry about competing with your mates for the moment
Let them beat you.
Over the next while, save up for a 1G-GTE conversion, and then blow the doors of most V8s and turbo 4's.
As for 1GGTE cost, factor in 1200ish for motor+gbox+ecu+wiring, and another 1200ish for exhaust/intercooler and another 600ish for unforseen things.
If you don't want to spend that much, then spend the money on stereo/rims/interior/body.
But hey, its all personally preference
