Don't worry about competing with your mates for the moment
Let them beat you.
Over the next while, save up for a 1G-GTE conversion, and then blow the doors of most V8s and turbo 4's.
As for 1GGTE cost, factor in 1200ish for motor+gbox+ecu+wiring, and another 1200ish for exhaust/intercooler and another 600ish for unforseen things.
If you don't want to spend that much, then spend the money on stereo/rims/interior/body.
But hey, its all personally preference
