according to best figures, the 2jz-gte vvti makes 30 more bhp peak power, and 15 more lb-ft of torque (interestingly, at the same 3600rpm as the non-vvti version)
I've never actually seen a side-by-side unmodified dyno graph of each - but my insincts say the vvti is your better option, as long as you're not planning on going super nuts on the modding
