the "advance it 'till it pings,and then back off some" method works fairly well actually.
as for this "2-3k factory flatspot",I'm on my second 4ac atm,and neither of them have/had this and I cane the butt of of them.
my immediate suggestion would be to get the thing tuned,replace the filters(fuel and air),and look into freeing it up some. do a search of the forum for suggestions on how to do this,there's been a little written about making the 4ac livable.
mine has had a few fairly simple improvements made to it,and it pulled 40kw atw on SAS's dyno the other week. that's with the std carb,cam,and internals. it's also 220k kms old btw... the engine isn't as sad as everyone makes out. a GE is obviously better,but the C isn't purely a boat anchor as many suggest.
