there are as many opinions as ive had hot dinners on this question. SSI has got it bang on though, theres no point even consdiering going to a bigger carb until you have completey out fuelled the 40mm ( and considering the number of jetting and emulsion possibilities ill doubt youll ever do it with that engine. In fact my own opinion would be that the 40mm throat will be better for you especially if you goto a bigger cam as the speed of the intake charge is greater than the 45mm.
In terms of Weber Vs Solex.... theres not much in it, both carbs if tuned properly will stay in tune for a reasonable length of time. Weber has cheaper and more readily available parts but solex arent exactly hard to find either.. in fact most bike carbs have jets to suit your needs. Toyota "used to" rate the solex as the better carb and infact they still use the slide type carbs on some of there engines now
