The 1ZZ is a great engine for what it is designed for... A fuel economical engine with good low down torque for the vanilla model corollas. As for kick...pfft it doesn't have any. It is a very flat engine when you wind it out. It has no definite kick anywhere in the rev range, unlike a 2ZZ. It also isn't very smooth at higher revs and is very buzzy and fatigueing to drive long distances on the highway.
After putting up with it for 18 months, I talked my wife into selling hers, paying out the loan and buying an older seca sx. It goes harder and is much smoother on the highway. It also is a much nicer car to drive. Doesn't feel like your driving a minivan.

I would like to see some dyno figures of a stock 1ZZ corolla because they certainly don't feel like 100kw to me. On paper they should go harder than the sx due to same power/weight but more torque. On the road its a completely different story.
