supposedly the 3K and 5K blocks are stronger than the 4K blocks when used at high rpm for long periods of time, but i have had no problems with any of my 4K's.

4K over 5K? no engineers cert needed in NSW, 3K head bolts on to 4K block for 10:1 CR whereas 5K has dished pistons, so 3K/4K head is too low compression, 4K has solid lifters which are better for high lift (>400thou) whereas 5K has hydraulic.

and 4K's are dirt cheap. ACL pistons for them are cheap and better than the original 4K ones....

basically, 4K is cheap fun to play with. if you are serious about more power and MUST stay K series, then 5K/7K are good, but 5K is 1500cc, 4AG is 1600cc, both weigh about the same, and 4AG is better in every respect, and similar in price.

there have been a few SC'd and turbo 5K's around, but if i was going to the trouble of turboing, i'd do a 4AG.

also 4K is more revvy, due to lower piston weight, and lower valve train weight (since the valve train is the limiting factor for both motors)

a 4K blovk with 60 thou OS pistons with ported 3K head will be cheap, fun and hard to break and probably cost less than just sourcing a 5K block...
anyhoo, my 2c
