If you are running an aftermarket ecu they re-map it to suit your engine so if you have a turboed car you can put more boost into it with out running it lean, they also check timing and you can adjust cam gears if you have adjustable ones that is.

But if you have a factory ecu you can't do much at all maby stuff around with your afm and timing.
