IRS open diffs cope with the power a lot better than a live axle open diff. This is because the torque transfer on the casing is reacted by the wheels and suspension, causing the drivers side wheel to lift, reducing traction on that wheel. The torque on IRS diffs is reacted directly by the chassis, no loading up of the suspension except for thrust line moments. (back of the car lifting or dropping).

Having said that, there is no reason why an open IRS can't cope with heaps of power off the mark. Theoretically it wouldn't make any difference wether it is open or locked. The problem is ensuring that you don't have any weight jacking due to porely fitted anti-roll bars or springs of different heights/rates.

Traction will be more of a problem on corner exit though. Your choice should hang on how soon you want to give it a hard time through a corner, not so much dragging at the lights.

Just out of interest, I tried weight jacking on my live axle celica to reduce wheels spin. It got very ugly when I changes into 2nd. with both wheels fighting each other for traction. and kicking the arse all over the place.
