NB. Most people can't stand these religion-based threads, and a lot of you might say that i'm an ass for hammering this topic. I'd prefer it if we just skip that bit, and move on to the part where I have questions that can't avoid being asked simply because it might be construed as persecuting religious people. I've always said that people can be as religious as they want, up until they moment they try to include it in the structuring of modern laws, or until they allow others to come to emotional or physical harm because of what their beliefs dictate they must do.

with that in mind, here's an excerpt from an episode of The West Wing which I find to be particularly relevant to this topic, and I thought some of you might agree.

My Chief of Staff Leo McGarry insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly says he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself, or is it okay to call the police?

Here's one that's really important, because we've got a lot of sports fans in this town. Touching the skin of a dead pig makes one unclean, Leviticus 11:7. If they promise to wear gloves, can the Washington Redskins still play football? Can Notre Dame? And WestPoint?

Does the whole town really have to be together to stone my brother John, for planting different crops side by side?

Can I burn my mother in a small family gathering for wearing garments made from two different threads?

President Bartlet: Think about those questions would you?

I'm not sure if I'm trying to make a point here, other than simply stating my confusion as to how so much faith is placed in such an outdated "manual" so to speak. The core truths are no doubt the most important - ie. that God exists, and that he loves us, etc. What confuses me is when people selectively quote the bible to defend their positions on certain topics, when holding the bible as the bottom line on lawful living must surely conradict their own way of life quite often.

Try to keep it polite hmm?
