Off car injection cleaning is about $30 an injector. They normally charge your mechanic $20 each, so the mechanic can then charge you $30 each plus the removal and refit. Car like a VL Commodore is expensive to get the injectors out (heaps of stuff to remove including intake manifold to get to the injectors). A VN - VX Commodore is about 10 minutes.
So it is really dependant on the car. My AE82 twin cam was about 20 minutes.
So 4 x $30, plus (say) 1 hour x $60 TOTAL = $180 max
Also, they do not run acid through the injector to clean it. It is a straight hydrocarbon to remove the gum buildup in the pintle chamber.
At the risk of upsetting some manufacturers/suppliers/sales reps, I will say that the following is my opinion.
Off car injection cleaning (which is what we have been pricing)is the ONLY way to do clean injectors.
On car cleaning, or the use of the fuel tank injector cleaning is a complete waste of time. With off car injector cleaning you get the following benefits:
1) Drip test - see if any of the injectors are leaking off cycle
2) Flow test - see if they all deliver balanced/equal volumes
3) Spray test - see that they all spray evenly
4) Filter baskets replaced
5) Proper cleaning of the pintle chamber, which cannot be achieved with the fuel tank additives.
In fairness to the suppliers of the fuel tank additives - they will help keep your injectors clean, ONCE THEY ARE CLEAN.
However, at $10 per tankful of petrol, you would spend nearly $500 on additive every year. Injector cleaning every 100,000km works out to be $45 per year for a far better result.
That's my experience and opinion.
