how well it works depends on the design.
most have a straight tube thru the middle with holes in it.
if the holes have been punched then bent (if you know what i mean) then it depend son the direction the bent bits face. if they face into the exhaust flow, the gas will get pushed into the packing material and is no good. if the bent bits face away from the gas flow, it will do sfa.
afaik, better resonators have many small holes drilled, so they allow sound absorption, but do not hinder the gas flow, so it's similar in restriction to a straight thru pipe.
i have 2 on my car, both are made by ESA (exhaust systems australia?) and cost $25 each (supplied) from "aus best muffler and tyre". $80 fitted sound sok for the labour involved possibly?
the idea is to cancel some of the amplitude in the exhaust by reflecting sound waves back onto themselves (destructive resonance?)
a coupel of resonators and a large chambered reverse flow muffler will make almost any car quiet. if you size the chambers and pipes right, the restriction is not that much of a worry.
