M series engines are notoriously expensive to rebuild.
I rebuilt a 5M(T)E. Parts and machining alone could have set me back over $1200. The price includes chemical clean, bore, hone, decked block, machine crank (all journals) and installation of new auxillary shaft bearings. I also got the same place to recondition the head (and while they were at it to fit larger exhaust valves). I picked up things like 5ME pistons/rings for $20 at clearout sales as a student, but expect to pay at least $300 for a set nowadays. Bearings (thrust, main and big end) will set you back around $140. The killers are the gasket set (roughly $300 - I got mine as a student years ago for $10) and the auxillary shaft bearings (only from Toyota and about $70). Should the oil pump gears be outside tolerance, then pay $130 per gear new from Toyota. I also spent $130 for a balance. I built the engine so I paid $0 for assembly (effectively blueprinted), but you would expect to pay $5-600 for that fun. Then add another $4-600 for installation and you end up with a grand total of $2500-3000. And you end up with a new 5ME. Big woopee! 
Rebuilding a 7MGE will cost you about the same amount and the result is significantly better (chat to Ed about his) but it will require some wiring work.
Or you could do a 7MGTE/1JZ/2JZ conversion.
