As well as comparing costs of 5ME and 7ME (that's assuming 7MGTE, 1JZGTE, 2JZGTE, 1UZFE, etc. are all out of you price range and/or personal skill level), don't forget about the good old 6MGE. Or maybe even 2JZGE? If you find one in reasonable nick, you'll end up with extra power, non-FI insurance rates, reliability and a relatively easy conversion at a reasonable cost.
When my 5ME started to die (after previous owner had thrown over $3K in the last 2 years at it), I saw that as my excuse to start the performance project! Of course, for the money spent so far, I could have done a 6 month round the world hoilday!
