ok im probably gonna cop shit for this being as im an apprentice mechanic, but does it really make them bad mechanics for leaving a couple of bolts out of the timing cover and the dust seals hanging out? i will admit to leaving bolts out of timing covers. sometimes, theres a bolt that will take you 10 minutes to get out, and more to put back in. its not worth the time when theres about 5 - 10 other bolts holding the case on which ways a couple of grams and will not fall off.
dust seals: these things are usually totally stuffed on older cars. i try to put them back on, sometimes they are stuffed beyond repair. the miniscule amount of dust that gets inside the timing cover will do no harm. a rock might, but this is rare even with ppl who dont put covers back on at all.
now im not defending these ppl, i dont know them they could be dodgy, the timing cover on your car isnt easy to get on/off but can be done without damage. i dont know you or them, and havent seen the extent of the damage, but is it really so bad?
