went through it with a fine toothed comb and found that one of the light bulbs for the brake lights had shorted itself onto the base, possibly due to the previous owner being an idiot and forcing the globe where it shouldnt have been. a trip to the wreckers and to auto pro resulted in a second hand rear right hand light relay and all new fuses and globes. the problem seems to be fixed, although whether or not my tail lights are working are another matter
