Nothing is easy. Only you can make the call what will serve your needs. For what it's worth, over here in Finland 304 cams are favoured in 5K engined rwd Starlets in gravel rallying. They are re-grinds, with 103,5 degree lobe separation. They're run at 2 degrees advanced. Those engines make anything from 160hp to 175hp at about 8 to 8,5 grand rpm, and about 180 to 195Nm of torque.
304 will offer something 290 will not. 304 would like to be mated with a close ratio gear set. I think it would not be such a bad idea to make gears 1 to 4 for max acceleration, and leave 5th just for cruising. This all teamed up with a touch higher ratio differential. I guess it would close to ideal if you make engine rev till 8 grand, and 4th gear will give you about 140-150kmh speed. It will not be a highway monster, but it'll have very sharp acceleration up to that point.
If a close ratio gearset is out of budget, there is an alternative. You could alter ratio inside gearbox which transmits the power to 'parallel shaft'. Having a different ratio here will move all gears from 1 to 3 closer to 4th (which is 1:1 ratio). This way you can gain back what you lose when mating higher diff ratio with standard tranny. That mod will also make your 5th gear ratio move further away from 4th gear.
