Generally the thing with digital TV is that in theory, if you have some/average signal, you should be able to get perfect reception. You will never get any ghosting like normal analog tv.
The signal is broadcast in the same sort of format as a DVD (obviously in a different resolution) and the set top box has hardware decoders like a DVD player which capture this and convert it to pictures.
The quality of the image will be dependent on your TV, as unless you have a high definition TV, then everything is going to be scaled back to native PAL which is 576 horizontal lines and interlaced. Strictly speaking, any standard definition program will look like a DVD on a TV like this. A high definition program will look different, but not necessarily better in regards to the fact you can't display any more than the tv can display and information is just removed.
