I've done it on my 4AGE, it is fiddly, took around 2 hours with 2 people (one to compress the valve springs while the other removed & refitted the locks)

You can use an air compressor with a fitting in the spark plug hole to keep the valves seated hard in the head. It wouldnt hurt to rotate each piston to TDC as you do each set of 4 valves as an extra precaution if your compressor decides to blow a hose or something (unlikely).

The valve springs aren't particularly hard, you can lean downwards on them with the engine in the car with a section of aluminium pipe (diameter similar to the top valve retainer)with a section cut out to access the two lock retainers with a strong magnet to remove them, then replace with a pair of angled tweezers (sp?). As I said, its fiddly, but after the first 4, you'll sail through the rest. Very Happy

But as oldcorollas said, its a good opportunity to take the head off and do some other beneficial work.

Cheers
Phil
