muffler and integral part of intake tract. if it is pre throttle, then it is there for WOT help...
think about it... what is loud noise? large amplitude waves of air compression.
what is intake tuning? getting the length of the intake right so the reflected large amplitude waves hit the intake valve while it is still open and stuff more air in there.
problem is, this is in small rpm bands, and at other rpm, there can be unwanted pressure reflections in the intake, causing flatspots 
the resonator is designed to add different frequency waves into the intake tract, in essence to provide cancelling or dampening to the nasty reflections, resulting in a smoother torque curve.
it is possible that removing it could help at certain rpm, but you will almost defintiely see a negative effect somewhere (with a stock motor)
thten again, some ARE just noise cancelling.. same principle, just not large enough to actually effect the induction process....
