The AFM does not need an airbox to function correctly. What you have proposed will work fine, provided there are no leaks of course.

I agree with Cruzsida though, you're very unlikely to get any measurable performance increase doing this, and if anything you will lose performance. You will get much more induction noise though so it will probably "feel" faster.
