some engines use that small amount of coolant to help control the cold idle. like the thermostat in your radiator, but when its cold it opens to bypass some air to lift the idle and after it heats up closes the valve and drops the idle down again. quite a simple setup with the aditional benefit of icy weather being the freezing issue
