alternatively, with your gauge (assuming it's not the wiring), you can clean up the contact on the senders resister.

When you pull the unit out of the tank, there is a box at the top of the bent arm (the movable one). Pop this off with a screwdriver and you'll see the resistor (a spring like piece) and the contact. Clean these up and then make sure the contact is good. I bent the contact plate down a little bit to ensure better contact.

Mine's been working well for over 6 months now.
