no, you dont
I just brought over My AW11 SC myself. Whole process takes around 3 months from finding car until its on road. Its easier than it sounds. Most Jap exporters organise shipping for you. Customs will orgainise other paperwork. It does help to know someone who does blue slips. When I got it on the road I had saved around 5k compared to what they go for thru tradingpost.
Do some research www.dotars.gov.au. BTW I paid $800 for shipping. (standard import pack)

especially when car is 15 years old or older
