while i'm on it, you can remove some length out of the spring to suit the higher bottom shock mount, but, this will reduce your suspension travel substantially - dorikan did this with his and found his bottoming out on the bump stops - so i wouldn't recommend this.

Yup, this is why I'm seeking to preserve the...
(1) spring travel, and
(2) ride height
...I have by shortening the strut to reposition the spring seat and use the spring I have.

Removing ~15mm from the strut with AE92 insert will require spacing of the insert to make it fit the housing, but I'm unsure of the implications of this, wouldn't want the shock to ever reach full extention and produce the effect of bottoming out.

If spaced from the bottom the full intended travel could be utilised in the bump/compression movement but not rebound/decompression movement. Probably better than the other way but still not ideal.

Basically just thinking about where in available range of travel the insert would sit at rest in this setup, ie.

Allowing significant (adequate) bump stroke but little rebound stroke. Interesting to think whether (theoretically);
(a) the strut passes rest (neutral) position in the first rebound stroke or whether;
(b)it returns to perfect neutral in the first rebound stroke. Probably depends on interrelationship of spring rate, shock rate, and bump force. Obviously (a) is desirable and if observed the only way the insert will limit travel is in low-load events (ie. car is light (over crest) and will increase propensity for car wheels to lose contact with road sooner than otherwise by limiting available initial decompression travel.

I'm assuming damper rate is linear. Is it?

Using coilover is I think no difference, the spring platform will be positioned identically regardless of whether it's fixed or adjustable. Does allow to use uncut strut and dial down the spring platform by 15mm then use standard inserts in uncut strut though.

Any idea of cost comparison of;
1) cut and weld strut housing
2) buy coilover kit, modify strut housing to suit
I think (1) costs less and should be serviceable and safe so probably my preferred option and definately I will get an engineering shop to TIG it as I'm not driving it if it's not safe!

[/thinking]

Sorry for length and narrtive-style format. Comments welcome.
