	Have a look at my web site and follow the links to Matt Green's JZA23 Celica.  This is an RA23 that has had a 1JZ conversion.  The engine bay pics should be enough to convince you that this is a very difficult conversion!
  Definitely go the 1G unless you're prepared to invest LOTS of time and money into a 1JZ project.  A tweaked 1G will still go very hard and unlike the 1JZ it won't have a dramatic impact on chassis balance.
