join a cams affilliated club that runs modern regularity. ive competed in that, its basically you drive around the track and have to keep your lap time as close to your nominated time as possible. they let cars out in order of the time they nominated so that theoretically there should be no overtaking (there is still a bit sometimes). and your not racing against the other cars so you can go at your own pace (usually everyone just tries to go as fast as they can within reason)
as long as youve had a bit of hard driving experience you shouldnt find it too hard. after the first 5 laps on the track (warmup) i only managed to pick up another half a second over the next like 25.
having good brake pads and if possible road legal race rubber is important. i had neither the first time, so u can still do it, but i ended up with no braking and no grip after a few laps
