i think it has to do with the ratio of bore and stroke in the engine. in an oversquare engine (small stroke, large bore) you get a lower revving but more toruqey engine than an undersquare one. a compairson between the two would be the 2JZ and the RB26, the nissan engine is more towards the undersquare end of the spectrum and the 2jz more oversquare.

more capacity = more power and torque all other things being equal, its just that the squareness of the engine effects how it makes its torque.

(if im on the wrong track just let me know but that is my understanding)

Edit: or if that isnt good enough for you. more capacity = more fuel and more air = bigger explosion = more energy produced (kind of obvious though)
